I am – A poem

I am
the oppressed speaking out against tyranny
the minority calling for equality
the people begging for civility

I am you
I am me
I am jailed
I am free

I am
the soldiers who have died
the mothers who have cried
the president who has lied

I am you
I am me
I am jailed
I am free

I am
the tortured in their jails
the wounded face which pales
the dying; hear their wails

I am you
I am me
I am jailed
I am free

I am
the hurricane that pounded
the failures that compounded
the waters that surrounded

I am you
I am me
I am jailed
I am free

I am
the 9th Ward homes destroyed
the National Guard deployed
the New Orleanians unemployed

I am you
I am me
I am jailed
I am free

I am.
