It’s been awhile since I did an AOTW Award post, so I figure I’ll give you all a little chuckle with this one. Today’s AOTW Award comes to us from Veterans for Peace member Mike Ferner, courtesy of Scroff.
Mike Ferner was arrested for wearing a T-shirt at the Jesse Brown VA Center in Chicago. Not just any T-shirt, mind you, but a “PROTEST” T-shirt!
According to Mike’s journal linked above, a security officer at the VA center originally asked Mike to leave because he was wearing a Veterans for Peace T-shirt. The officer accused him of “protesting”. Despite informing the officer he was only drinking his coffee and would not leave, he was promptly arrested:
“Hey, listen. I’m a veteran. This is a V.A. facility. I’m sitting here not talking to anybody, having a cup of coffee. I’m not protesting and you can’t kick me out.”
Mike goes on to write the following:
You know the rest. Handcuffed, led away to the facility’s security office, past people with surprised looks on their faces, read my rights, searched, and written up.
At the end of this gross display of Asshattery, one of the two officers involved, Officer Ousley, only charged Mike with disorderly conduct rather than additional charges of criminal trespass and weapons possession (he was carrying a Swiss Army knife).
So congratulations Officers Adkins and Ousley. You two have earned this week’s Asshat of the Week Award!
